Itas fine to be nervous, but learning to balance and stay up isnat nearly as hard as learning to balance a family and keep it together!
Donat worry, though. Just keep a few things in mind, and youall be skiing like a professional in no time. The first thing to think about is equipment. If you buy your own, itas fine to buy it used. Just make sure itas still sturdy and in good condition. The skis should fit your feet and your grip should feel good in your hands. The rope canat have any tears or kinks.
The most important thing to remember before you begin learning how to slalom water ski is something moms already know by heart: safety first. You can learn how to slalom water ski in less than one hour, and you can do it without falling, and without a lot of expensive water ski lessons. Many people try to waterski without proper preparation, and it is no surprise that they have a tough time. But if you understand and practice the proper form and technique, you will conquer waterskiing without stress.
Proper body position is key in water skiing. Fortunately, this is something you can practice on dry land. By the time you get out on the water, your body will know what to do. First, roll your shoulders. Move them back and forth, from front to back. Now roll them all the way back and keep them in this position, which will feel as if your shoulder blades are pinching together. Next, take a deep breath, expanding your chest, and arch your back. This is the correct position for your upper body during slalom skiing.
Hold a short bar, like a cane or a short broomstick, or better still, a water ski handle, as you practice. Now that your upper body is in the correct position, let's get your hips to the right place. Pull back with your shoulders until your upper body is leaning back about 45 degrees or so.
From this position, move your hips upward. Do not pull in your arms or change the position of your shoulders. You will feel the rope pulling from your hips. Check whether your knees are in the right position: your ankles should be slightly behind the front of your knees - picture yourself crouching. Your shins will be angled forward over your feet just a bit.
Keep practicing this position until it's very comfortable. It's now time to practice the sitting position, which will give you control while slalom skiing. Assume this position by keeping the handle in front of your knees, holding them together and placing your feet slightly outward, just a bit wider than your hips.
Once youave practiced these postures, you will be ready to slalom water ski on the water. You will want the driver to start at a very slow speed. With the boat just moving forward, you can get the feel of the water under the ski, relaxing into the correct sitting position.
When you can hold this position comfortably, without wavering, for at least 5 seconds, then you are ready to stand up. The driver will speed up to the slowest speed that allows you to stand up. Practice moving from the sitting to the standing position, and back.
Get comfortable sitting, standing and moving on the ski, then start experimenting with movement, staying within the wake of the tow boat. You did it! You are now slalom water skiing! To really carve within the wake takes a little more practice. Start slowly and don't take too much risk. To keep safe and in control, control your form and body position constantly.

My name is Joe Plumber. For quite awhile now I've been thinking about learning how to slalom waterski but I just don't have the time. The thought had processed into my head when we first bought the house on the beach and of course my wife loved the view of the lake from our patio room upstairs. Its a magnificent sight to see when the moon hits the waves just right, in the ghostly season of fall. I guess my wife just wanted the house for the gorgeous view, and the kids just wanted it to ride they're dirt bikes along the beach during the summer, and I just wanted it because of the lake. As soon as I had realized that, I went and bought some water skis.
It never occurred to me that water skiing could be dangerous. Learning to ski scared me since I was a little child. Now that I am older, I am also more adventurous. A few days ago, I bought a pair of skis at the local surf shop. My son Adrienne came along. Since he showed some interest in trying the skis himself, we did just that.
After we returned home, I took out my recently bought motor boat. Although I had bought it last year in the fall, it hadn't been used since the lake was too cold. Now that it was spring, I finally got a chance to start my new boat. I was looking forward to this day for several months. I was glad that my son Adrianne was going to enjoy it with me. In the warm air and perfect wind, I said to myself "It is a perfect day for water skiing".
The port was loaded with safety equipment and I tied the rope around myself. My son started the motor. I was pulled into the water before I even got my skis on. I was screaming at him hysterically to stop the boat. Deep down, I realized that I proved my child's fear of skiing to be true. After being buried for so long deep in my psyche, the thought had finally surfaced. I had two choices: face my fear or back down from the adventure I had been looking forward to. My answered lied in my son's laughter when he pulled the boat up to the shore. As he laughed at his old man, I said to myself "Oh, you think that's funny". I promised to myself that I would never look like a coward in front of my son since the day he was born, and that was the best day to prove it.
I said "Adrienne, come on lets try this again." He said "But dad, you nearly died, are you sure you want to do this again?" I said "Yeah, I'm sure. Come on tie that loose end of the rope back onto the boat." This time I had made sure to put my skis on properly before holding on to the rope. Adrienne got the motor running and there I was with my slalom ski style equipment on, quickly fastening my helmet. I knew I was ready as a blitzkrieg of splashy waves hit the water in a militant fashion. "Come on give me all you got" I said to myself to compensate for the little bit of fear I had, knowing this was my destiny.
Halfway in the water, the fear began to ebb. I felt free. As I forgot all my worries, I knew I was in love with this sport. It was a thrill to ride, as I screamed as loudly as I could "I am the king of the lake, that's right, king of the lake". I was also thrilled to see my son turn around and see that I was no longer scared. My wife watched me from the shore smiling. I yelled for her to come and try it, although I knew she couldn't hear me. I felt alive for the first time in a long time.
My son wanted to take a turn skiing, since I seemed to be having so much fun. We decided to take turns. I saw joy in his eyes and felt closer to him than ever before. Since that time, I always see a part of myself in my son. It is now a lot easier to face my fears and I know that this is a very special bond.
Looking back I know why I was scared. I was scared because if I showed my son I was scared, then he might be scared to try in life. So don't ever be scared to try in life. Its not what fear you have, its how you overcome that fear of learning how to slalom waterski. I had learned to face my fears. Who knows? I might even do it again tomorrow!

Most water skiing enthusiasts share a common characteristic: mastering their sport to the point of no longer feeling any challenge. Once you have become comfortable on two skis to the point where it becomes boring and unchallenging, it is time to make the move to slalom water skiing, that is, skiing on one ski. This kind of skiing presents a much more challenging ski than skiing on two skis.
We suggest taking lessons from a trained professional who can give advice and pointers on your technique out on the water, but this tutorial can give you a basic idea of what to expect when slalom skiing. You can learn a few basics by reading the tutorial, but you won't really know what it's like until you've gotten out on the water and given it a little practice.
Learning to slalom ski will provide a fun and interesting new challenge for you, but be sure to do a little research before jumping out into the water to give it a try. Watch an instructional video, search the internet for more tutorials, and get some advice from experienced slalom skiers.
Once you have an idea of what to expect, you must determine which foot goes forward. This can be done in a variety of ways. You may not even realize that you have a leading foot, but try one of these tests to see which one is yours. Begin leaning forward until you must catch your balance; the foot you step forward with is your forward foot. You might also think of which leg you put first into your pants.
Now that you have your forward foot designated, its time to get out on the water. You will begin with two skis as usual, but once you feel comfortable you can begin shifting your weight to your forward foot. When you feel comfortable, let the other ski slowly fall away.
